Abu Bakr Supermarkets is celebrating the first anniversary of its Batley store with a special promotion, offering tea to customers for £1 as a gesture of thanks to the local community.

The Batley branch, which opened in 2024, introduced a new store format for the retailer, featuring a modern interior design, wider aisles and an updated layout aimed at enhancing the shopping experience. It has since become a popular destination in the town, noted for its expanded range and contemporary feel.

A spokesperson for the company said the anniversary provides an opportunity to acknowledge the store’s reception over the past year. “Batley has been an incredible addition to our family of stores. The community has supported us from day one, and this site showcases how far we’ve come as a brand — from a single shop to a supermarket group with modern, community-centred stores,” the spokesperson said.

Explaining the £1 tea promotion, the spokesperson added: “This celebration is our way of saying thank you to Batley for embracing us. A simple cup of tea for £1 is a small gesture, but it reflects our appreciation for the customers who make everything we do possible.”

The anniversary comes as the business continues to expand across West Yorkshire. Abu Bakr Supermarkets traces its origins to 1987, when Abid Hussain, then 17, took over the family shop. The business rebranded in 2002 and opened its Queen’s Road store the same year, marking the beginning of sustained growth.

Additional branches followed at Roundhay Road in 2004, Beeston in 2015 and Kirkstall in 2022. In 2017, the company broadened its product offering with fresh produce, halal meat counters and a wider selection of world foods to align with the needs of local communities.

As the Batley store reaches its first anniversary, the company says it remains focused on further expansion and meeting evolving customer expectations across the region.
