The food and drink scene in Leeds has attracted attention from the likes of Jay Rayner, who studied here as a student, as well as Masterchef regular Grace Dent, food writer Marina O’Loughlin and even Gordon Ramsay.
Here are 10 Leeds restaurants recommended by the top critics, and what they had to say.
7. Home - Marina O’Loughlin
Another of Liz Cottam's ventures, Home, was reviewed by Marina O’Loughlin for The Sunday Times in 2017. O’Loughlin hailed the restaurant, now located in Brewery Wharf, as a "little star in Not London". Photo: Simon Hulme
8. Kino/MorMor - Jay Rayner
Jay Rayner visited Leeds, where he studied politics as a student, in February this year. The Guardian food writer praised Opera North’s restaurant Kino, which opened in New Briggate last year and hosts a rotating line-up of up-and-coming chefs. Occupying the kitchen at the time was Levantine-inspired street food business MorMor, which has now launched a pop-up at Trinity Kitchen. Rayner said: “Expect dramatic bursts of harissa and tahini, labneh and dukkah. Expect to be cared for.” Photo: Kino
9. Sous Le Nez - Jay Rayner
Before his visit to Kino, Jay Rayner stopped off at French restaurant and bar Sous Le Nez in Quebec Street for pre-dinner drinks. He said: "The wine list is huge and leather-bound, but starts with a long and smart offering of wines under £30." Photo: James Hardisty
10. Mr Mackerel - Jay Rayner
Rayner's third and final recommendation on his latest trip to Leeds was Mr Mackerel in Kirkgate Market. He praised his mackerel bun from the Turkish grill, which he said was “probably the best £5 you can spend on lunch anywhere in Leeds right now.” Photo: Jonathan Gawthorpe
