Review: Footloose, Bradford Alhambra

Footloose is yet another example of a pared down touring production. The sets are functional and at times annoying, whilst in the opening scene the sound struggled to find its own level, at times drowning out the singers on stage.

But the production is all about teamwork and the young cast worked their way through the musical’s iconic 80’s songs and high energy dance routines with gusto.

The musical tells the story of city boy Ren who moves to a rural backwater in America where dancing is banned. Breaking every taboo in the book, Ren is determined to bring dance back to the town, held back by the memory of a tragedy.

The show evolves around Ren and Luke Baker tackles the role with powerful emotion, incredible dancing skills and an amazing singing voice.

Bradford born Gareth Gates as Willard, the rather nerdy hill-billy, shows a great talent for comedy.Although at times overplayed, it delighted the home grown audience.

Making the transition from sugary-sweet preacher’s daughter to feisty teenage temptress is no easy task, but newcomer Hannah Price succeeds beautifully.

Footloose is packed with songs to set your feet tapping such as Holding Out for a Hero, Let’s Hear It for the Boy and the title song.
