Music preview: Jess Thristan at White Rabbit, Leeds

“I’ve always been a huge fan of The Beatles, they’re one of my favourite bands,” says Jess Thristan, explaining how her new single is a version of the Fab Four’s first British chart-topper, From Me To You.

“And I love the idea of taking an old song particularly and changing it into something that is more your own so when the opportunity came up to do a cover for the album I knew the kind of song that I wanted to do.

“Of all the songs that I had to pick from, From Me To You just really stood out to me as the one that we should go for. It’s one of my favourite Beatles’ songs in its original form but when you actually look at the lyrics they’re really sentimental and really heartfelt so I wanted to do that kind of a version of the song to show people that side of it – and I hope that’s what we’ve done.”

The 20-year-old Halifax singer-songwriter says she slowed the Lennon and McCartney song down to put her own stamp on it. “I think that’s what you need to do,” she says. “I wouldn’t have just done a standard cover of a song. For me, if I’m going to do a cover I want to make it into something that is my own and just shows people a different side to the song.”

Her rendition of the song has been chosen to accompany a commercial for Sky Television in Germany. “In cinema and online it’s all over Germany now, it’s really exciting and very cool,” says Thristan. “I’ve never done a gig outside the UK so it’s going to be cool to see how it branches out into different territories.”

Thristan’s debut album looks set to follow next spring. It’s been a work in progress, with several London-based co-writers, for the past couple of years.

“The thing is the album keeps changing and evolving as it goes along, which I think is really important anyway for the album so it keeps getting pushed back until it’s absolutely perfect,” she says. “At the moment we’re very nearly complete. I’m so proud of this album, I can’t wait for it to be out there but I don’t want to put it out there until it’s 100 per cent amazing so that’s what I’m holding out for.”
