The Umbrella Academy is back.

Based on Gerard Way's Eisner-winning comic, the Emmy-nominated series starring Ellen Page and Tom Hopper will return for a third season.

The hit show follows the story of the adopted children of billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, as he prepares to save the world.

Inexplicably, the children are seven from 43 infants who were born on the same day in October 1989 to unconnected women who had shown no signs of pregnancy the day before.

They also possess abilities beyond the ordinary - thus seeing the birth of Hargreeves’ academy.

Though the team disbands after family fractions through their teenage years, they reunite upon the news of their father’s passing.

The clan work together to figure out the mysterious events leading up to Sir Reginald’s death but their contrasting personalities again put strain on their relationships.

All while needing to save the world from an apocalypse in season one and a time travel plot in season two. When it rains, eh?

What happens in season 3?

A reunion of sorts is set to take place in season three as Ben, the previously deceased Hargreeves sibling, is back with a different attitude to what they might expect.

Not only that but it appears Ben is part of the mysterious Sparrow Academy, which has seemingly replaced the Umbrella Academy when the Hargreeves clan returned from the 1960s.

Viewers can expect 10 one-hour episodes on Netflix.

Who stars in the show?

Netflix has confirmed that all of the show's lead cast are due to return.

All the characters viewers have become accustomed to have been confirmed to return, including Ellen Page (Vanya Hargreeves) and Tom Hopper (Luther Hargreeves).

Production will begin in February 2021 in Toronto.

When will season 3 be out on Netflix?

Viewers will have to wait a little while before they get to view their heroes on the screen, with a launch date for the new season yet to be announced.

Though that hasn't stopped the rumour mill from churning, with Digital Spy reporting an air date of late 2021 would be the best case scenario.

There were 18 months between the airing of season one (February 2019) and season two (July 2020), meaning a release date of around January 2022 could be on the cards.
