In the Heights is at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in July

Classic and new films, documentaries and opera from New York’s Met are on the big screen at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre in July.

The theatre is also introducing a new audio description service, believed to be the first of its kind in Scarborough

From the first screening of The Father on Friday July 2, the venue will offer audio description on most of its screenings.

The normal film soundtrack is broadcast via speakers in the usual way, while a recorded narrator explains what's happening on screen through personal headphones for those who need it.

The Stephen Joseph's film programmer Steve Carley said: “July is a busy month in the cinema at the theatre

“We’re screening our first classic film chosen by our Facebook followers. For horror fans we have A Quiet Place II, and if anyone needs to catch up, there is also a chance to see the original film.

“It’s also a great month for music fans: we have the exciting new musical In the Heights; our first ever screenings from Met Opera, and a new documentary on music legend Phil Lynott.

“This month is also special because we are introducing our new cinema audio description service for our visually impaired audience.”

David Bowie stars in cult fantasy Labyrinth

Labyrinth: David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly in the 1986 fantasy movie voted by the SJT’s Facebook followers as the first in a series of ‘Facebook classics’.

Thursday July 1 at 2pm and 7pm

The Father: Anthony Hopkins won this year’s Best Actor Oscar for this performance of a lifetime movie as a man with dementia, alongside Olivia Colman, Imogen Poots and Rufus Sewell.

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci star as Sam and Tusker in a deeply moving story about a couple travelling across England and coming to terms with Tusker’s recent diagnosis of early onset dementia

Friday July 2 at 2pm and 7pm; Saturday July 3 at 2pm and 7pm; Tuesday July 6 and Wednesday July 7 at 7pm; Thursday July 8 at 2pm and 7pm

In The Heights: Quiara Alegria Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical about the lives and loves of the residents of New York’s Washington Heights area translated to the big screen.

Met Opera: Porgy and Bess (event cinema – first broadcast February 1, 2020): Bass-baritone Eric Owens and soprano Angel Blue in an explosive new version of Gershwin’s great American opera.

Horror movie sequel A Quiet Place II will be screened in July

A Quiet Place II: Cillian Murphy joins the original cast in this sequel to John Krasinski’s already classic horror movie, also showing at the SJT this week.

A Quiet Place: John Krasinski directs and stars alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, in this terrifying story of a family trying to silently navigate a world in which monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing rule.

Met Opera: Carmen (event cinema – first broadcast January 16, 2010): Richard Eyre’s popular production of Bizet’s searing drama sees mezzo-soprano Varduhi Abrahamyan make her Met debut as the title character.

The Reason I Jump: Based on the book by Naoki Higashida, this immersive film explores the experiences of non-speaking autistic people around the world.

Friday July 30 at 2pm and 7pm

Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away: A documentary telling the story of how Phil Lynott, a young black boy from working class Dublin in the 1950s, became Ireland's greatest rock star.

Saturday July 31 at 2pm and 7pm
