1973 proved a year of change and challenges for the city and its residents. Parking charges were introduced on a Saturday while plans were unveiled to demolish a city centre landmark. This collection pulls together memories from the city centre and the suburbs including Armley, Meanwood, Rothwell, Burmantofts and Roundhay. The images are a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks. May 1973 and Newman Idle had constructed an Hawaiian guitar, which he plays through a 60 watt amplifier. "I have always been interested in music," said the 75-year-old from Garforth. "In a shop I saw one of these guitars priced at £250, and thought 'I could make something similar myself.' My son and I made it in three weeks." His guitar cost a mere £25, the most expensive item being the mahogany case to give it a full bodied tone. Photo: YPN
