Family desire for city centre lifestyle
Canal Mills on Brandon Street, which has most recently been used as a nightclub, will be transformed into a “European model” housing development aimed at families and retired people who want to move back to the city centre.
Developers, Rhodes Asset Management, want to demolish the extensions that over the years have been added to the former cotton mill, dating back to the 1860s, and create 60 flats that are one and two bedroomed and 77 houses that are two or three bedroomed.

According to plans submitted to Leeds City Council this week, houses will have a roof-top garden, there will be a resident’s courtyard, allotments and fob controlled bollards to allow access to the development which is being laid out like a “modernised version of the traditional Yorkshire terraced street”.
Nick Brown Architects has drawn up the plans with families in mind who want the city centre lifestyle too.
It appears to be an emerging new trend for city living and the idea is influencing new developments.

It is interesting.”
