Days Out: Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Sheffield
A former rural scythe and steelworks, the Grade I listed building was originally called Abbeydale Works and was a main producer of scythes and hay knives.
Waterwheels, crucible steel furnaces, worker’s houses and workshops make Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet one of the largest water powered industrial complexes on the River Sheaf.

Hide AdAbbeydale is home to the Crucible Furnace which was built in 1830 - this was where crucible steel for tools was made and is the only kind in the world still intact.
Visitors can take a trip through time as they make their way through the Counting House, where the Works Foreman and his clerk carried out their duties, before taking in the Manager’s House for a view of how the other half lived.
This is in stark contrast to the row of Workers’ Cottages built between 1786 and 1793 which gives an insight into how workers and their families would have been housed.
There is a hands-on Works Gallery for kids to get involved with before enjoying the picturesque surroundings outside in The Orchard, grabbing a bite to eat in the café or buying souvenirs at the museum shop.
