A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed that the incident is being treated as arson.
The Commercial was famous for being run by former Leeds United player Peter Lorimer, but it has laid derelict for several years.
In 2013, Lorimer told The Scotsman his beloved pub was "quiet" amid the decreasing working population in the area.
