My lifelong friend from London is visiting on what turns out to be a gloriously sunny afternoon in Leeds, and I decide to push the boat out.
I come to the conclusion that Angelica would be the perfect lunchtime spot. The rooftop venue oozes elegance, with floor-to-ceiling windows, an outdoor terrace and a spacious bar and dining area.

It’s busy with plenty of customers popping by for a drink or a meal, and there’s a small party of people next to us celebrating a special occasion.
I’m expecting budget-busting prices to match the quality setting but when I look at the menu I’m pleasantly surprised.
There is a great range of ‘all day brunch’ dishes, such as a Full English, Croque Madame, waffles and eggs Benedict – all reasonably priced from £8 to £12. There is also a handful of starters such as tempura soft shell crab, lobster mac and cheese and ham hock terrine.

It also offers a lunchtime deal with two courses for £15 from the set menu.
But there’s one dish that catches my eye – the half grilled lobster and fries with a glass of prosecco for just £15. It’s too much of a bargain to resist.
My friend goes for the beef and bone marrow burger with chipotle mayonnaise, pickled slaw, cheddar and bacon in a pretzel bun with fries for £13. As I tuck in, we realise my friend’s food order has been mixed up and she’s instead been served a steak frites.

The steak looks mouth-wateringly juicy before it leaves the table. But her burger arrives within minutes – with a free glass of prosecco to make up for the mix up.
It’s a lovely surprise and very generous considering the issue was resolved so quickly, and speaks volumes for the staff and service.
The burger is cooked to perfection and my friend tells me she is impressed by the quality ingredients.

The waiter brings us the bill and informs us he has deducted the price of the burger – another generous offer.
From the service and surroundings to the food and views, it seems quality is key at Angelica.
