The 500-year-old windows are now covered in images created by one of the house’s visitor assistants.

Each image designed for people to enjoy safely from outdoors depicts one of the traditional verses of the Twelve Days of Christmas.

The illuminated windows are a feature of a different Christmas at the Temple Newsam estate which has hosted festive celebrations for the past 500 years.

Maya Harrison, principal keeper at Temple Newsam House, said: “Christmas has always been a very special time at Temple Newsam and the house has seem some memorable celebrations over the centuries, from huge feasts and dances hosted by aristocrats to our own Christmas exhibitions and events in more recent years."

She added: “We wanted to ensure that, despite the current COVID-19 restrictions, we were still able to spread some festive cheer and give our visitors something beautiful and traditional to see while they’re enjoying the estate safely.”

The best known English version of The Twelve Days of Christmas was printed in 1780 in a book called Mirth Without Mischief.
