Photo nostalgia: Wakefield in days gone by

A change of scenery in this week’s nostalgia page as we take a look at how nearby Wakefield has changed over the last century.

The tramlines and cobbles were in place in this view of Westgate but a handful of cars and motorcycles gave an indication of things to come. The Midland Bank on the left is now the HSBC.

The cars were more advanced in 1938 when the Grand Clothing Hall building dominated this view of the town centre .

In the same year this bustling scene was photographed further up the road at the Bull Ring and twenty years later in the fifties a similar view showed that a cleaner modernity was creeping in.

Wakefield Bus Station looked like a quiet place in this view from over fifty years ago .
