Leeds has always been ready to defend its citizens and in 1985 apprentices from the nearby Army Apprentices College at Harrogate made a stand for Operation Defender.

Soldiers from the same establishment were put through their paces at the Leeds Touch Typing Centre in 1968 under the watchful eye of Mrs Kathleen Senior and in 1961 Drum Major Sleightholme was grilled by General Sir Michael West at Leeds Grammar School.

Major General Ronnie Somerville said goodbye to his soldiers in 1972 before moving on to a new job at the Ministry of Defence and in 1970 First World War veteran Major F H Plummer, a highly decorated Leeds soldier, received three medals from the conflict after waiting for them for over fifty years.
