Leeds has always been a buzzing centre of scholarly excellence and our pictures show just a few examples of student life from days gone by.

Future Home Secretary Jack Straw danced with the Duchess of Kent in 1968 and rag weeks were celebrated in style in 1948 and 1975.

It was a university challenge in the seventies when dilapidated classrooms caused a problem for hirsute students and in 1977 an accommodation crisis hit the Polytechnic.

Despite these minor issues, being educated in Leeds has been major plus on anybody’s CV ever since the founding of Leeds University just over a century ago.
