Sadly, he is no longer with us but back in April 2001 Nelson Mandela made an indelible impression on the City of Leeds.

Thousands watched the great man on the sound stage in Millennium Square while others watched the proceedings on large screens TVs.

The South African captain of Leeds United Lucas Radebe and TV’s Jon Snow were on hand to help.

It was a great and emotional day for Leeds and one that will never be forgotten.
