The Big Story - August 1988: Superstar Michael Jackson became the latest international entertainer to play Roundhay Park and his concert was on his 30th birthday.

More than 90,000 ecstatic fans joined in unison to wish heir hero many happy returns of the day.

And ‘Wacko Jacko’, as the press tended to call him at the time, let them know how they made him feel.

Through a beaming white smile he told them: “I was hoping you’d forget. Thank you. That’s very, very kind of you. I love you all.”

The Yorkshire Evening Post team were the only journalists invited backstage to meet the man himself.

The star was pictured backstage by YEP looking relaxed.

Other big names to play Roundhay park include Bruce Springsteen, Simple Minds, Madonna and Robbie Williams.
