Leeds nostalgia: Ice and snow

Shivering shoppers, beleaguered motorists and heroes battling through the snow.

Leeds has seen it all over the years and particularly during those winters when the snows went “big”.

Our pictures show ice breakers and ambulance crews battling to help those in trouble as the temperature plummeted.

Even Leeds United weren’t impervious to the frigid onslaught and in 1963 the ground froze over necessitating the use of a lethal looking “disc harrow” machine to make the surface playable.

Of course it can be so much fun as our Roundhay Park sledgers found out in 1962.

Throughout the years Leeds has both endured and enjoyed the extremely cold weather that periodically comes it’s way.
