Health: Get fit and have fun outdoors this spring

Have your say

Studies have proved that outdoor exercise makes people happier than working out indoors because natural, outdoor environments are more stress-relieving.

With this in mind, fitness brand Reebok have teamed up with Visit Leeds to come up with the top five picturesque places to work up a sweat and get fitter, healthier and happier this spring.

Roundhay Park is one of the largest parks in Europe and yet is just minutes from Leeds City Centre. With more than 700 acres of incredible parkland, this is the perfect place to get active this springtime. The park also offers a series of pre-mapped routes of different lengths and gradients offering a range of options for those seeking to follow a specific route.

More than 200 acres of parkland lies adjacent to the 100 acres of landscaped grounds of Harewood House, making up the Harewood Estate. With a variety of terrain, from gentle pathways to steeper cross-country routes, there’s plenty for everyone to challenge themselves here. It also hosts a series of competitive and charitable sporting events across the year, including colour runs, triathlons, a 10k and a half marathon, as well as regular trail races in the midst of the extensive parkland.

Just six miles from Leeds City Centre, Golden Acre Park offers more than 130 acres of beautiful parkland. It’s also located on the route of the Leeds Country Way and Meanwood Valley Trail for those looking to cover greater distances on their run.

Temple Newsam not only boasts a Tudor Jacobean residence, but also extensive grounds and parkland, which includes football pitches, a golf course, woodland trails, cycle paths and bridle paths. This offers a whole host of fitness and sporting activities on top of walking and running and the grounds also host a weekly Park Run, part of the national initiative offering timed free 5km routes across the UK.

Linking Leeds and Liverpool with a distance of over 200km, the Leeds to Liverpool canal, complete with pathway is perfect for runners or walkers who are looking to up their distances while also capitalising on the changing scenery.

Starting from Leeds City Centre, experience the heart of the city, before exploring further out into the incredible countryside which is just a few miles from the starting point - the locks and barges which line the route are also a delight to enjoy.

For those who are looking to shape up this Spring but want to work out in a group environment led by a top UK trainer and that’s free to attend, Reebok host complimentary Cardio Ultra fitness classes in the Intersport Sporting Pro in Kirkstall Valley Retail Park, every Saturday 10am - 11am.
