THE SEARCH is on to find the brightest young stars from across the county for The Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards.

The YEP-backed awards recognise outstanding young people under the age of 35, who have made an impact locally, regionally or nationally.

Awards chairman Peter McCormick said: “I am confident there are many young people who deserve recognition this year and we want to hear about them! It doesn’t matter whether they are world famous or are known only within their own community.

“What is important is that they have had an impact because of their talent, fortitude or determination to achieve a better life.”

The annual awards help raise money for the Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation (YYAF).

Last year the awards, which are sponsored by McCormicks Solicitors of Harrogate, reached the £1million milestone, raising the impressive sum to help young people across Yorkshire.

Three-year-old Ellie Renton, who lives near Ripon, received a YYAF grant for a new power wheelchair.

The adorable youngster suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy and cannot stand or walk.

Mum Yvonne said: “This grant will give her the independence we want for her, for now and the future.”

Categories for the awards, which are now in its 22nd year, include Personality of the Year, Youngster of the Year, Unsung Hero, Achievement in the Arts, Education, Management and Enterprise and Sport.

Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletccher won the Achievement in the Arts Award in 2001 and has been supporting the cause ever since.

He said: “It is always a great evening and it is pretty inspiring seeing young children overcome such adversity, and they always seem to have a smile on their face.”

Nicola Furbisher, the YEP’s managing editor, said: “The Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards are a chance for our heroic young stars to shine.

“The grants are a fantastic lifeline for local youngsters like Ellie, and the YEP is proud to be a part of it.”
