A DETERMINED woman from Rothwell is embarking on a year of charity challenges in memory of her father.

Linda Wales’ father Melvin died from heart disease when he was just 42.

Now Linda is marking her own 42nd birthday by trying to raise £42,000 for three heart charities.

In the next 12 months, she will tackle a gruelling endurance challenge in the Lake District as well as various cycling, hiking, climbing, running and abseiling challenges to help reach her fundraising total.

She said: “In May 2014 I will turn 42, the same age my Dad was when he died from heart disease – an illness that kills more people each year than cancer.

“ I will take on a year of challenges – 12 different challenges at one per month for the year that I’m aged 42.

“My aims are to raise at least £42,000, and to spread awareness of heart disease, a sometimes-silent killer.”

Linda, an IT account manager, will kick-start her fundraising with the Ullswater Challenge, which will see her canoe the length of Ullswater, climb England’s third highest mountain – Helvellyn – and then tackle a 22-mile bike ride in just 10 hours.

Money raised will go to the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, British Heart Foundation and Heart Research UK.
