An clinical scientist is swapping his lab coat for lycra as he gears up for an epic US coast-to-coast cycle ride.

Dr Mike Bosomworth, who is based at Leeds General Infirmary, will ride 4,200 miles from New York to San Francisco this autumn.

His challenge will take seven weeks, riding 100 miles a day and with just one rest day, and he will be raising money for the new Yorkshire Brain Research Centre in Leeds.

The keen cyclist, who has previously cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats, said: “I have been working for the NHS for 40 years and when I reached by 60th birthday I wanted to celebrate these milestone anniversaries and take on the biggest challenge of my life. My dad and aunt both had Alzheimer’s.

“Being able to prevent or cure dementia would do so much to improve people’s lives and help the NHS in these austere times. I want to raise as much money as possible.”

This is just the latest feat for the veteran fundraiser, who has previously also cycled coast-to-coast in the UK, completed parachute jumps and climbed Kilimanjaro for good causes.

The father-of-three said the US ride was his biggest ever and he was gearing up for a tough physical and mental challenge.

He plans to ride solo, but may be joined by friends and family to keep him company along different stages of the route.

During the ride, Dr Bosomworth will be camping or staying in motels and paying all his own expenses so 100 per cent of the money raised will go to the Yorkshire Brain Research Centre.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation Trust is aiming to raise £2m for the centre by 2015.

A partnership between Leeds Teaching Hospitals and Leeds University, the centre will conduct research and clinical trials into Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and dementia.
