What's On: Leeds city to be made entirely out of cake at second indie food festival

As part of this innovative festive, now in its second year, the entire city of Leeds is to be recreated... out of cake. It should be a real jaw-dropping moment, in more ways than one. The Gallery at Munro House, The Tattooed Bakers and Leeds Indie Food Festival have come together to create the installation, which will be on show at Trinity Leeds from Friday May 13. Talk about having your cake...

To mark the launch of Leeds Indie Food Festival next month, Trinity Leeds has announced it will play host to the city under its iconic glass roof, made completely out of cake.

The Gallery at Munro House, The Tattooed Bakers and Leeds Indie Food Festival have come together to create an immersive installation of the most iconic buildings in Leeds, which will be on show in Trinity Leeds from Friday 13th May. Visitors will be able to take a walk through the sponge and ganache architecture, as well as enjoying a slice of some of the most impressive buildings in the city.

The edible art exhibition will showcase various cultural institutions of Leeds, including the Town Hall, Corn Exchange, and the mix of iconic Victorian and modern architecture. Designed in collaboration by The Gallery at Munro House and London-based Tattooed Bakers, the cake will be made from edible icing and sponge cake. People will be able to watch the creation installed in Trinity Leeds main atrium in the lead up to Friday 13th May.

Dan Wharton, Marketing Manager at Trinity Leeds, comments: “The City of Cake is a fantastic project, and we’re very proud to work with these fantastic partners to support the amazing culture and creativity happening in our city. Leeds Indie Food Festival is set to be even bigger and better in May, and having homed some of the best independent street-food vendors in Trinity Kitchen over the past few years, it’s great to see an entire festival dedicated to showcasing this kind of culinary talent.”

Ellie Andrews, owner of The Gallery at Munro House, added: “Food, people, art, music, theatre, sport, industry, architecture, and heritage. These are the elements that make up the cultural identity of Leeds and we’ve been able to bring all those things together in a playful, fun way for the public to enjoy. With Leeds Culture Strategy currently being produced, we are starting to reflect and observe on what culture actually means for us as a city. In doing this installation, we hope to spark conversations, inspire, engage, bring people together to collectively celebrate, and talk about the culture of their city, all over a slice of cake.”

The Tattooed Bakers are food artists based in London mostly known for their ambitious and large scale cakes. In 2015 they worked with The Gallery at Munro House to create The Edible Exhibition, which re-created four pieces of Contemporary Art that were exhibited for one day only in May, to raise awareness of the British Art Show.
