A lovingly adapted take on Raymond Briggs’s story of a slimy monster from an underground world whose job it is to make things go bump in the night for “drycleaners” – that’s humans to the uninitiated.

An all-star cast includes Timothy Spall in the lead role, with Victoria Wood, Keeley Hawes, Joanna Scanlan, Paul Kaye, Marc Warren and Jimmy Akingbola in support. The story is narrated by Lord of the Rings actor Andy Serkis.

Fungus lives in the darkness with his wife Mildew and their son Mould but when Mould becomes curious about life on the surface, they are forced to leave their grimy home in Bogeydom behind.

Disguising themselves as humans, or “drycleaners”, they try to live among those they have been spending their lives trying to scare. The family also has to contend with the much feared Bogeyhunter Scarface who is hot on their trail.

Combining both live action and animation, the classic tale of Fungus and his family’s foray into the world of daylight is a charming family adventure about living alongside the things that go bump in the night.
