Music video: Yorkshire band Maia

Have your say

Described as “sci-fi folk evangelists”, Maia are a West Yorkshire folk pop acoustic quartet.

The group – who comprise Tom Clegg on guitar, ukulele and vocals, Joe Haig on piano, trumpet and vocals, Simon Robinson on guitar, banjo, mandolin and vocals and Will Fletcher on drums, cajon and percussion – met in 2010 while studying at Huddersfield University.

Their sound has been described as “youthful, spirited, richly atmospheric and intelligently off-centre alt.folk pop”.

To date, the four-piece have released one album, Pepper Stars, early copies of which came out in a bespoke wooden, branded sleeve.

Choque Hosein, formerly of Leeds band Black Star Liner, produced an EP for them.

Maia play at Otley Courthouse on Friday February 21; they also have a show at The Printworks in Wakefield on April 1 and support Stackridge at the Brudenell Social Club, Leeds on May 16.
