Song writing team Deuce & Charger aim to put Leeds firmly back on the musical map.
The trio – Pete Bott, Becky Keighley and Yoni Collier – who were previously in the electro-pop outfit Heads We Dance have been working on a series of collaborations with artists from across the city including Phoenix Pearl, Bianca Gerald, Weezy Jefferson and The Witch Hunt.
The idea is modelled on similar projects by Gorillaz, Massive Attack and The KLF.
This track, Always Broke, is sung by Benn Moore, a Leeds College of Music graduate, and the video features footage provided by fans that was put together by Leeds filmmaker Ben Brady.
An album is expected to follow.
Says Bott of the project: “It’s about bringing a lot of people together to create something exciting. It’s been a long time since Leeds was the centre of anything musically exciting. Sometimes it’s a confidence thing.
“The Kaiser Chiefs were the last Leeds band to say, ‘We’re fantastic, everyone should love us’. There are so many artists, musicians, filmmakers and photographers making great stuff [in this city]. We need to shout about it. It’s about putting Leeds on the map – that starts with everybody talking to each other.”
