Originally slated for a June release, the movie was then pushed back to September, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the movie back, with producers hoping to make it the Christmas blockbuster of 2020.

Director Patty Jenkins brings the world of Wonder Woman to 1980s America, with Gal Gadot returning as the DC superhero up against Maxwell Lord and Cheetah.

In the trailer, we see Diana time travel back to the 1980s, and Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, reappears.

Set in the backdrop of Washington DC, the movie looks to be set in the country's political capital at the height of the Cold War.

The trailer also reveals the first glimpse of Kristen Wiig as Cheetah partnering up with Pedro Pascal, who plays supervillain Maxwell Lord.

Although it doesn’t give too much away regarding the plot of the movie, it does offer a glimpse of some of the action sequences and show off Wonder Woman’s signature Lasso of Truth.

When is the release date?

In the UK, the film will arrive on Wednesday 16 December, and according to Variety, could be released on Sky Cinema shortly after.

In the US the film will be released simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO Max.

Originally the film was set to be a summer blockbuster, with a June 2020 release date, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, this was pushed back until September, then October before being changed again.

The currently-scheduled December release date could still be changed yet again, with Gal Gadot revealing that the premiere date is being reviewed by the producers every two weeks.

The first movie, released in 2017, grossed over $800 million at the worldwide box office.

What’s the plot of the new film?

The sequel is set 66 years after the original movie in the year 1984, so get ready for shoulder pads and big hairstyles.

A few details have been released about who Diana Prince (Wonder Woman) might be facing in the movie. It was revealed that she will be taking on not one, but two major supervillains this time around.

It has been reported that the film is another historical adventure with Diana facing up against Soviet Union powers.

Who is in the cast?

Fans of the first film will see some familiar faces as well as a surprising return.

Gal Gadot is back for her fourth DC film as Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman.

However, the shock return revealed in the trailer is that of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.

Despite dying at the end of the 2017 film he will be seen running through 80s America in the sequel.

Another returning character is Antope, played by Robin Wright, who is Diana’s aunt and general of the Amazon army.

Pedro Pascal, from The Mandalorian, plays Maxwell Lord. The movie villain was revealed to be based on President Donald Trump.

Bridesmaids star Kristen Wiig is another new edition to the franchise, playing Cheetah. The character is an archaeologist who befriends Diana. Fans of the comic books may also know her other name, Barbara Ann Minerva.
