Set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and created specifically for Disney+, Wandavision is a highly anticipated new series that landed on the streaming service in January.

Starring Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision, it’s quite unlike the typical, action-packed epics many would have expected from the comic book behemoth.

The first episode wouldn’t have looked out of place among classic, black and white comedies of the 60s (it was reportedly filmed in front of a live studio audience, which explains the ‘canned’ laughter throughout).

Disney+ is increasing prices by up to £24 per year - what users need to know

Future instalments are racing through the decades towards the present day, taking on the tropes of sitcoms from the 70s, 80s and beyond (Seinfeld meets the MCU anyone?).

If that sounds strange, that’s because WandaVision is. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

What is WandaVision?

Kicking off ‘Phase Four’ of Disney’s dollar-spinning MCU franchise, WandaVision follows the cataclysmic events and tragic losses of big screen blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The off-kilter TV series sees Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprise their roles as super-powered sweethearts Wanda Maximoff and Vision, who seem to be enjoying idealised suburban lives.

The couple conceal their abilities from the close-knit community of Westview – including nosy neighbour Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) – but soon begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems in their white picket-fenced paradise; the truth is far stranger than either of them dare imagine.

Do I have to have seen the Marvel films to enjoy it?

Indeed, WandaVision’s surreal premise might not be what many superhero fans would have been expecting from the first original MCU series of the Disney+ era.

But early reviews indicate it’s more than worth a watch (at the time of writing it has a 94 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes), and being just that little bit strange, means even those who haven’t seen all of the Marvel films 10 times will still be able to enjoy the show to its fullest.

Writer Jac Schaeffer has previously described the series as “half classic sitcom and half full MCU spectacular”, and fans have speculated that the series could be taking place inside Wanda’s mind - others say that it could be an alternative timeline.

Captain Marvel’s Teyonah Parris, Thor’s Kat Dennings and Randall Park from Ant-Man and The Wasp are all set to make appearances, which will keep the comic book fans happy.

But there will also be musical numbers, with songs to listen out for from the Oscar-winning writers behind the biggest hits of Disney's Frozen… You don’t need to be a Marvel superfan to enjoy this one.

What time can I watch it?

The show was originally announced in 2019 and was initially expected to premiere Spring 2021.

However, at the beginning of 2020, it was confirmed that WandaVison would be one of the rare TV and film projects to make its way to screens earlier than anticipated, and it was released on Disney+ on 15 January.

At the time of writing, the first eight episodes of WandaVision are available to stream through the service right now.

Will the whole series be available at once?

The series will consist of nine episodes in total.

The first two episodes of WandaVision premiered on Disney+ on 15 January, with the seven further weekly instalments debuting on Fridays.

Disney+ will hike its prices soon, a change which will see the price of a monthly subscription rise from £5.99 to £7.99, as annual subscriptions increase from £59.99 per year to £79.90.

Those who are already existing Disney+ customers will not see their bills increase until 23 August 2021, meaning if you sign up to the streaming service before 22 February, you can take advantage of the current prices for six months.
