David Hoyles’ ‘Yorkshire Brass’ show on BBC Radio Leeds has also been giving people the opportunity to perform as part of a special band for the day, playing alongside all of the brass, jazz, funk and other musicians in the grand finale.

But it was Sheffield where the volume was really turned up with more events than any other city in the country, with support from the team at the University Of Sheffield, with Professor Vanessa Toulmin, Director of City & Cultural Engagement and Adele Bailey, of The Plug.

Local bands were busking up and down on the trams - with special recorded station messages by Jarvis Cocker - from the University to the train station, with young rockers Liberty Ship getting things rolling as early as at 9am.

Sheffield indie star John McClure, whose band plays Mosborough Music Festival tomorrow, said: "I was asked at very short notice to busk for BBC Music Day, so I turned up at couple of places and played guitar with Eddie, my bandmate from Reverend and the Makers, to a load of people. We had a great day.

"It's a great idea. It makes music accessible to the general public. I've brought my wife and m little boy to make it a family do. There's 22 music events in Sheffield alone. It's very much in the spirit of what Sheffield's culture and politics is about. Free and accessible to everybody. It's what Sheffield is all about, established bands down to young nine-year-olds rapping and an opera singer at the Town Hall. It's a greta thing. Long may it continue."

Sundance frontman Harry Walker said: "We've only played about nine gigs, including the drummer's barbecue, so to be invited to play on BBC Music Day, and be interviewed by the glamorous Paulette Edwards on BBC Radio Sheffield has made our day. It's great to see the BBC giving breaks to lots of other new bands like us and putting us on the same event as people like Jon and Ed from Reverend and the Makers."

It was all part of the national BBC Music Day, which will see Duran Duran and Laura Mvula live at Eden, Travis and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in concert, live music including events at 40 iconic bridges, and unique musical celebrations across the UK including a vegetable orchestra led by Shaun the Sheep.

"Sheffield Makes Music is part of the BBC’s national event which will give the city the chance to show off its music heritage with acts to suit all ages and tastes," said a spokesperson.

"The day’s line-up has been made possible thanks to support from the University of Sheffield, Sheffield’s Business Improvement District (BID), Hope Works and Arts Council England.

"It comes shortly after a music report, commissioned by the University of Sheffield which outlined the city’s booming music sector and how Sheffield is well-positioned to be the UK's leading music city."
