Do you want to learn about the significant people, places and events in the textile trade and clothes manufacturing industry who helped to make Leeds what it is today? Or maybe you fancy listening to some lunchtime music from the comfort of your living room? Here's some of what's on this week in Leeds:
1. Armley Mills
A walk run by the Canal and River Trust will take place at 10.00am and 1.00pm on Wednesday, April 21. Meeting at the car park at Armley Mills, Let's Walk Wednesday will be along the Leeds Liverpool Canal and through the park, equating to under three kilometers and around an hour of walking. The session will be led by Liz Green from the Yorkshire and North East team at the Canal and River Trust.
2. Newborns at Temple Newsam
Spring has sprung at Home Farm at Temple Newsam and it’s hopping with adorable new-born lambs, piglets, calves and kids. You can get up close to the springtime babies and all the other rare breed farmyard favourites and discover the farm's rich history. A perfect day out for the whole family to enjoy.
3. Zero Waste Leeds
The Leeds Textile Trail tells the story of the people, places and events that helped to shape the city that Leeds is today. The textile trade and clothing manufacturing helped Leeds to grow during the 1800s and 1900s. With beautiful illustrations and links to further information, the Trail will help you to discover how textiles and clothing manufacturing have played such a central role in the development of our city. The Trail is part of the Leeds Fashion Futures project, which is led by Zero Waste Leeds with funding and support from The RSA.
4. Air Place Studios - LeedsInspired
Centring around community engagement and creativity, this colourful exhibition of postcards is on the Aire Studios website in conjunction with a physical exhibition at Aire Place Studios in 2021. They’ll be displaying 16 postcards along with community submissions that everyone has the opportunity to take part in. LeedsInspired have funded the project and copies of postcards can be requested in return for a donation which will then go towards a limited edition book.
5. Temple Newsam Online Exhibition
Temple Newsam’s Below the Salt is an online exhibition of works by Catherine Bertola, shown alongside the first inventory of Temple Newsam House, made on 12 September 1520. They explore how the house has been occupied by people and objects over the course of its 500 year history. The exhibition can be found on the Leeds Museums and Galleries website.
6. Graham Barber - Leeds Town Hall
Leeds Town Hall is hosting a lunchtime organ music session with Graham Barber on Monday, April 19 who will present a live audio stream from 1.05pm. Graham Barber is one of the foremost British concert organists of his generation, having played at most major music venues in Britain, as well as in Europe, the Far East, Australia and the United States. The live stream link will be available on the Leeds Town Hall website.
