Leeds puts on six events for Bonfire Night

Bonfire night, dates back to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when conspirator Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, but today is one of the year’s family favourites.

And Leeds is staging no fewer than six organised bonfire and firework events across the city.

Public bonfires organised by Leeds City Council will be held at Roundhay Park, East End Park, Springhead Park in Rothwell, Woodhouse Moor, Middleton Park and Bramley Park tonight.

The biggest bonfire is at Roundhay Park which traditionally attracts an estimated crowd of 70,000 people each year. The bonfire on Soldiers Field will be lit at 7.30pm and followed by fireworks at 8pm. It is sponsored by the Yorkshire Magical Lantern Festival.

Middleton Park and Rothwell Springhead Park are being backed by the White Rose Centre.

These bonfires along with those at Bramley Park, East End Park and Woodhouse Moor, will be lit at 7pm tonight, with fireworks set to begin at 7.30pm.

Coun Lucinda Yeadon, council executive member for environment and sustainability, said: “We are very proud to be able to offer once again six brilliant public bonfires across the city. All of our bonfires offer a safe and fun environment that people of all ages can enjoy.

“We are very fortunate to have a great team who work behind the scenes to manage our public bonfires on the night.”
