Leeds music student, 11, lands star role in School of Rock

Eleven-year-old Phoenix Taylor, who dreams of playing lead guitar in his own band, won the role of the band’s guitarist in School of Rock The Musical, which is based on the Jack Black film.

Phoenix, who also plays piano, bassoon and sings in the school choir, said: “A family friend bought the film for us when I was about six and I watched it with my brother. I never thought I would be in it!

“When I found out I’d got the role I felt overwhelmed at first and I was really excited. I couldn’t believe it was me, I could not wait to start.”

Phoenix, who has moved from his home in York to London for the role, will perform three times a week and will be on standby for another three shows.

He said it felt “amazing” to perform on a West End Stage.

“I feel privileged,” he added. “I worked really hard to get here and I am glad that I was picked.”
