Gig review: Jack Savoretti at O2 Academy Leeds

His music has been played right across the airwaves and more frequently on BBC Radio 2 than a Slade song at Christmas. He’s a favourite of Chris Evans and Dermot O’Leary thus pushing his presence to the masses but infinitely quite later than he deserves.

As talent goes, he’s been drenched in it for a long time and blessed with a voice to make audiences swoon.

Unsurprisingly it’s a relatively full house at the O2 Academy Leeds, a mixture of all ages which is a testament to the draw he has on people.

Support is given from female singer/songwriter Jones. Imbued with soulful tones and what seems like an influence of bands such as London Grammar, she certainly has a very bright future to look forward too.

Jack Savoretti and band take to the stage with a somewhat melancholy start. As a newbie to his songs I’m not entirely sure of the set list content but tracks from his new album are met with plenty of love. Throughout the set you can see his passion emerge and confidence build and by song six or seven the set becomes largely more upbeat.

You can tell Savoretti and the band are having a lot of fun, his charm is personable and his voices is all the gravelled lustre you’d imagine from his Italian/English heritage.

As the set draws to a close Savoretti has completely captured this audience, not just by the palm of his hand but by the scruff of their necks and shook them up somewhat.

It’s relatively unusual to have a crowd this large for an acoustic artist unless you’re Ed Sheeran, but Jack Savoretti has certainly earned his place in front of the mic tonight.
