Gig preview: The SSS at Kazoopa Festival launch party, Verve Bar, Leeds and Sheffield City Hall

“Myself and a couple of the other members were in a band,” explains drummer Max Smith, “and the lead singer Coddy [Josh Coddington] was in another band and we’d all played football together from a pretty young age and it came out of that, really, just knocking about kicking a football about and that went into music then it suddenly all came together quite quickly.”

Now a five-piece – with guitarists Tom Forster and Morgan Somers and Cal Atherton on bass – the Sheffield band have released two singles and an EP, Love, Lust, Loss, which was produced by Dave Sanderson, formerly of Reverend and The Makers. This week they’ve released a new single, The One You Need.

“We’ve had a relatively quiet year just waiting for this single to come out then it’s suddenly got very busy very quickly,” says Smith.

Having built a following via word of mouth – “Especially with the name when we first started, it was like, ‘What is that? Who are The SSS?’ That creates a bit of intrigue” – in March they became one of only two unsigned bands to sell out The Leadmill in Sheffield. “The other one was the Arctic Monkeys so it’s a pretty good feeling,” says Smith.

Next Friday they’re due to perform at the launch party for Kazoopa Festival, at Verve Bar in Leeds, then the next day they play their biggest home city show to date, in the ballroom at Sheffield City Hall. Gigs in London and Amsterdam follow in December.

Smith has high hopes for The One You Need. “Hopefully everybody will like it and we’ll get a good reception off it. We put a lot of time and effort into it.” Similarly they’ve been concentrating on perfecting their live shows. “We do we try and lock down every detail that we possibly can.”

In Sheffield they’ll be headlining a bill that includes contemporaries Sundown and The Vellas. “There’s a lot of good stuff going off in Sheffield again,” says Smith. “It’s getting back to how it was in the 2006-2007 days where Arctic Monkeys, Milburn, The Harrisons and Reverend and The Makers all came from.”

Smith feels the spotlight is once again being shone on music from the North of England. “With the Blossoms being big in the charts and on Radio 1 all the time, as a result people start looking at what else is going off in the area. Sheffield has started to erupt now and hopefully that spotlight will help us all progress.”
