Yorkshire golf: YUGC president Jonathan Plaxton on captain Darryl Berry's pivotal role in title defence

YORKSHIRE will begin the defence of their Northern Counties League title at Seascale GC on Saturday when they take on Cumbria.

Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs president Jonathan Plaxton talked ahead of the White Roses’s two warm-up matches about the important role played by captain Darryl Berry in securing the title for the county last season.

Berry last summer completed a double - he has now won the Northern Counties title both as player and captain.

This year he has lost the past two English men’s amateur champions, Nick Marsh and Joe Dean, to the professional ranks.

But in Saturday’s team he will field two players - Meltham GC’s Jamie Bower and The Oaks GC’s James Walker - who only this week were selected for England duty.
