Turf Talk: Moore celebrates biggest career success as Irish Cavalier spoils Cue Card's party
Snapped up by Rebecca Curtis as stable jockey, the Irish-born rider was not overawed as he helped the Newport handler continue her fine season with a gutsy display.
Despite being only seven years old, Irish Cavalier, a 16-1 chance, was too strong for his talented and senior rivals as he took the scalps of Menorah and Cue Card.

Hide AdCurtis admitted being surprised by the performance, saying: “I thought he’d run well, but I didn’t think he’d win. He’s still only seven and he obviously gets three miles. He’s improving every season. It’s possible he could run in the Betfair (Chase, Haydock on November 10), we have to start thinking of all the top three-mile races now.”
Should Irish Cavalier he go to Haydock then he is likely to clash with Cue Card again.
His trainer Colin Tizzard felt the lack of race fitness was to blame for the shock defeat.
“I thought he was going to win, but he tired after the second-last,” said the Dorset handler.

“He’s only been beaten two lengths, so we’ll go for the Betfair Chase. I’d sooner he won, but I’m delighted with him.”
Jack Sherwood was another young rider to open his Grade Two account when getting 13-2 shot Silsol home in the bet365 West Yorkshire Hurdle for trainer Paul Nicholls.
In Ireland, Sessay trainer Dandy Nicholls’ admirable seven-year-old Sovereign Debt struck for the fourth time in Ireland when claiming the honours in the Listed The Tote.com Knockaire Stakes at Leopardstown. The Nicholls charge was 15-8 favourite.
