Turf Talk: Alexandrakollontai can be the name on everyone's lips at Leicester

Alistair Whillans’ mare will strike a degree of fear into the unlucky race-caller charged with shuffling out seven syllables within a heartbeat.

Bookmakers, too, should also on be on edge if she does what is expected of her in the EBF Stallions Breeding Winners Fillies’ Handicap.

The six-year-old mare is not the most consistent of animals, but she has been in good nick this summer and did particularly well over this course and distance in May.

Alexandrakollontai took charge of a six-furlong fillies’ handicap on fast ground when she zoomed five lengths clear in what was admittedly a moderate encounter. The handicapper understandably shovelled another 6lb upon her back, but recent performances tend to suggest she is not done with just yet.

A fast-finishing fourth at Hamilton back over six furlongs neatly evidenced that theory, after which she was stepped up to a mile at Carlisle on June 22.

The daughter of Amadeus Wolf once again caught the eye, especially a few furlongs from home, but the trip probably found her out and she ended up finishing third at big odds. With that run very much in mind, the return to Leicester over seven furlongs should be just the job.

Fendale should also be followed in the big race at Doncaster’s evening meeting.

Trained by Michael Dods and owned by Ritchie Fiddes, the four-year-old has a bit to prove in the Terry Bellas Memorial Handicap.

He had looked a horse going places quite quickly in his salad days, but he was not good enough for races like the Gimcrack at York and the Cornwallis at Newmarket.

The four-year-old has occasionally flickered with intent since then, though.
