Wharfedale claim another huge win in the battle to beat the drop

Wharfedale's Tom Mann.

Wharfedale gave their fight against relegation another boost on Saturday after a 30-14 win at Blaydon in National Two North.

The visitors started the day level on points with Blaydon, hovering just above the bottom three on points difference, but flew out of the traps from the off and raced into a 17-0 lead after 20 minutes. A penalty try got Wharfedale on their way, and Tom Barrett added a penalty before converting a try from full-back Tom Mann.

Two further penalties put them in control, and although tries either side of the break from the hosts reduced the gap to nine points, Matt Houghton raced clear to seal the victory and help the visitors pull clear of their rivals.

Otley’s game away at Sedgley Park was postponed just half an hour before kick-off.

With Preston Grasshoppers well clear in the North Premier division, Harrogate kept up the fight for second place with crucial wins on Saturday.

Harrogate secured maximum points to stay fourth after a 28-10 win over Kirkby Lonsdale. Charlie Purkiss Mcendoo scored two tries, with Guy Coser and Luke White adding one apiece, White himself four from four on the conversions.

Meanwhile, Ilkley heaped more misery on bottom club Pocklington after claiming victory 28-22 in the Yorkshire derby.

West Leeds lost precious ground on the leaders in North One East after a 10-10 draw at home to Alnwick, a result that did neither side many favours.

Hooker Archie Rike-Rayne’s first-half try was converted by Dale Breakwell to put the leaders 7-3 ahead at the half-time interval, but it was a successful penalty from Breakwell eight minutes from time that was required to earn a share of the points after a second-half try had put the visitors ahead.
