Relegation looms for Guiseley after away defeat

The defeat means the Lions are 15 points away from safety with 15 points left to play for.

Guiseley made a bright start with Dayle Southwell seeing his effort well saved.

Lions boss Sean St Ledger was going up against his old team and so was Ben Frempah, who had the misfortune of heading into his own net from a long throw.

Guiseley’s task became even more difficult, as Jamey Osbourne saw his effort from distance take a big deflection and go in leaving keeper Joe Green with no chance.

The rest of the first half turned into more of a battle in midfield, with neither team creating clear cut chances but it still left Guiseley with it all to do going into the second half.

The Lions got back into the game thanks to a Southwell penalty after he’d been fouled in the area. He made no mistake with a calm finish.

Moments later Max O’Leary had to be at his best to save a fine Darren Holden effort as Guiseley looked to get back level.

But it was Solihull who got the next goal, with Darren Carter delivering a cross that Fiacre Kelleher glanced in.

Try as they might Guiseley then just could not get another goal with Rowan Liburd seeing his effort cleared off the line.

Sean St Ledger said: “It is disappointing to lose. We’ve faced one of the form sides in the league and could have got back to 2-2 then who knows what happens.

“We just have to go again and look ahead to Tuesday’s game against Barrow. We know how important that game is for everyone.”

Elsewhere in the National league, FC Halifax Town lost 1-0 at Torquay United.

A 2-0 home triumph over Southport saw Harrogate Town stay within one win of Conference North leaders Salford City with both teams still having three fixtures left to play.

Ryan Fallowfield set up a goal in each half for Mark Beck and George Thomson.

The assisting full-back also blocked an equalising chance from Dion Charles on the line, while James Belshaw made a stunning save to deny prolific Sandgrounders marksman Jason Gilchrist.

Adam Boyes kept Bradford Park Avenue’s faint play-off aspirations alive, with a brace in his team’s 2-1 victory at Boston, taking his season’s tally to 18 in the league.

Pilgrims captain Jordan Keane had earlier headed the hosts in front from an Ashley Hemmings free kick, but Boyes signalled a warning of intent by rattling the bar with a thunderous, edge-of-the-box effort before levelling from a firm header after Mark Ross’ cross.

Substitute Antoine Remi Recizac (twice) and Frank Mulhearn went on to see shots hooked off the line, prior to Boyes settling matters on 90 minutes after the ball fell to him in the box.
