Otley suffered a disappointing 13-12 home reverse at the hands of Tynedale in miserable conditions at Cross Green in National 2 North.

The visitors went into the game without an away win this season and a dour first 40 minutes in incessant rain offered up few chances. The only points by the mid-way stage belonged to Tynedale from a penalty.

After the interval Otley looked to be in the groove when they took the lead with a try from prop Adam Blades, converted by skipper Stephen Depledge, but back came the opposition to score a try of their own and snatch back the advantage.

Otley continued to use their forwards effectively and added a second try when No.5 Jack Scott-Paul went over, but the game ultimately hinged on a kick for Tynedale which was successful and proved enough to take the points by the narrowest of margins.

Harrogate braved driving rain to defeat Preston Grasshoppers 15-5. Harrogate’s tries came from Tim Heaton on 15 minutes and Lewis Minikin on 75 minutes. Elsewhere, a try in the last five minutes cost Sandal victory in their 15-13 home defeat by Broadstreet.

Two tries from centre Steve Nolson helped Ilkley book their place in the third round of the Yorkshire Cup with a 20-6 win over Hull.

Nolson’s tries came in the first half, and with scrum-half Joe Rowntree converting both and adding a brace of penalties, it proved enough for them to ensure they will line up against Sheffield in the next round.

Yorkshire Two leaders West Leeds carried on their good form to secure a 27-18 win over Yorkshire One outfit Old Brodleians in the second round of the Yorkshire Shield.

Pontefract were 44-3 winners at Whitby with hooker Andy Smith scoring a hat-trickfor the visitors.
