Leeds Carnegie have bolstered their pack for next season by agreeing new two year contracts with second rowers Mike Myerscough and Matt Smith.

Both players joined the club last season from Cornish Pirates and have been mainstays of the team this season in the promotion challenge in the Greene King IPA Championship.

Smith, 24, has featured in 15 of the team’s 18 league games so far this season establishing himself as the first choice second rower at the club.

Mike Myerscough, 27, has now recovered from injury and hopes to play a major part in helping the side’s play-off challenge in the coming months, starting with this Sunday’s clash with Bristol at Headingley Carnegie, kick off 3pm.

Director of rugby Chris Gibson said: “We are delighted that Mike and Matt have both agreed new contracts with the club. Matt has really found his feet this season and has been a key player for us.

“I know that it has been a frustrating time for Mike with his injury concerns however his attitude and professionalism off the pitch has been outstanding and he has shown his quality on the pitch when fully fit. We are in the process of agreeing a number of new deals with the squad and hope to have further announcements this week.”
