Elsewhere, Otley lost 44-34 to South Leicester and Sheffield slipped to a 47-11 defeat at Tynedale despite only trailing 12-11 at half time.

Sandal took an impressive 35-12 win against Birkenhead Park in the North Premier League with James Ellar scoring a brace of tries. Simon Frewin and Tom Allott also scored tries with the rest of the points coming from the trusty boot of Greg Wood.

Despite being 17-5 ahead at half-time, Ilkley let that lead slip and went down 29-24 at home against Preston Grasshoppers.

Elsewhere, Harrogate won 40-20 at Pocklington. It was an error-ridden performance by the visitors who nevertheless had too much firepower in the backs. Pocklington, to their credit, competed well in the scrums, but were second-best in all other aspects. Penalties littered the first half though the first was missed by referee Mr Taylor when Pocklington’s kick-off failed to go the regulation 10 metres.

He did, however, spot a ‘short’ re-start a little later in the half.

Harrogate’s forwards laid the foundations for success in the second half, spearheaded by full-80-minute debutant props Evan Woodworth and Uran Jerlija, and second row Harry Johnson.

West Leeds lost ground on the North One East leaders when they were beaten 37-19 at Dinnington, while Huddersfield YMCA were 25-22 winners over Driffield. Malton and Norton took maximum points from their 24-0 win over Bridlington, while Bradford and Bingley secured a good 40-28 away win at Percy Park.
