The round three fixture marks Rhinos’ return to Betfred Super League action after their World Club Challenge defeat at Melbourne Storm and some of Leeds’ squad have been back in this country less than a week.

Tomorrow’s game will be the first time Cummins has faced Rhinos since joining Widnes – who were beaten 18-10 by Warrington Wolves last weekend – as assistant-coach in the closed season.

He said: “When I saw we were the first cab off the rank after their Australian trip I knew we could benefit from it.

“I just want us to be better than we were last week and I think we should be.

“I hope they are tired out after the travelling.

“These things are a test, but they are the champion team and the challenge for Leeds is to make sure they get over that.

“They are competing for league points and our job is to make sure if they are tired we make the most of it.”

But he added: “I think it’s about more than just trying to make them tired.

“Mac [Leeds boss Brian McDermott] said they wouldn’t beat Melbourne with five drives and a kick and it’s the same for us.

“We won’t beat Leeds like that, we have got to play. That was the most frustrating thing from last week

“The effort was good, but we didn’t play – we didn’t attack like we wanted to attack.

“We have to make sure we put a better performance in. We will need to if we are going to beat Leeds.”

Cummins spent his entire playing career at Leeds and had a stint as an assistant-coach before joining Bradford Bulls.

After leaving Odsal he worked in rugby union with Yorkshire Carnegie and Doncaster Knights and said: “I am glad to be back in the game. I enjoyed my time in rugby union and I can coach in both codes, but I’m glad to be back in league and hopefully making a difference.”
