We’ll focus on ourselves not on Leeds Rhinos insists Wakefield Trinity coach Chris Chester

Having lost 10 successive games and gone bottom of Betfred Super League, Trinity bounced back with two wins in four days, over Huddersfield Giants a week ago and Hull KR last Sunday.

And boss Chris Chester said that has created “a buzz around the place and a confidence within the playing group”.

He insisted: “It is amazing what a couple of wins does to a group.

“We’re really pleased to have responded in the way we have and to come up with two really good performances.”

Rhinos coach Richard Agar has named an unchanged 21-man squad following Monday’s 28-24 win over Castleford Tigers, but Chester stressed he is focusing more on what his side can do, rather than the threats Leeds – who Trinity face again on Sunday – will pose.

“What we have changed over the last couple of weeks is we’ve not worried too much about the opposition and tried not to over-think things,” he said.

“We’ve tried to just focus on the things we are doing well on the training field and in games. I’ve not really paid too much attention to Leeds, we have looked at the areas we can improve and certainly the areas we have been good at over the last couple of weeks.

“We’ve played with a lot more energy with the ball and not been scared of throwing the ball about and that was plain to see last weekend.

“This game is more about what we can do and focusing on the things we are doing really well at the moment.”

Trinity have come through their latest round of coronavirus testing unscathed, but Jay Pitts, Craig Kopczak and Titus Gwaze are still isolating, as is a member of staff.

“They should be in and around the squad over the next few days and certainly should be available for maybe the last game, though I am not too sure about the Salford game next week,” Chester confirmed.

“Things are looking good, these guys have gone through the mill the last 14 weeks and there’s not been one week when we’ve been able to go with the same 13 or the same 17, for one reason or another.

“It is nice to have that continuity and it breeds confidence. The players are certainly playing with confidence, but we know [today] is another step up. We aren’t going to get the cheap possession we got against Hull KR, but you can certainly see a difference within the group.”

Captain Jacob Miller is set to return from injury today, but Chester revealed Matty Ashurst and Tony Gigot are unlikely to play again this season after being hurt against Hull KR.

Chester said: “We’ve lost Matty, he has gone for the year. It looks like an operation on an ankle.

“Tony Gigot injured his left elbow and it looks like he is going to be three-four weeks, which rules him out.”

He added: “It is disappointing for both of them, especially for Tony because he has been stood down a couple of times through track and trace.

“He has not been able to get a run of games, with a couple injuries there and looking back it is probably because of not getting a proper pre-season under his belt and coming to us pretty late on. But we are going to see some young kids, certainly on Sunday we are looking to play the majority of the kids or the guys who haven’t had much game time over the last couple of weeks.”
