Wakefield Wildcats: Fearless full-back Jowitt is relishing French test

They tackle joint-top Catalans Dragons during the first game of Sunday’s Magic Weekend list at Newcastle having defeated leaders Warrington Wolves last week.

That was an eighth win in nine games under new head coach Chris Chester so it is no surprise last season’s bottom club, who have risen to sixth, are so buoyant.

Exciting full-back Jowitt is just one of their players who has caught the eye and, asked if they can push on for the top-four and a highest-ever Super League finish, he admitted: “Definitely. Why not?

“The camp is buzzing at the moment. There’s no reason why we can’t.

“This run just shows we can beat anyone. We’re not afraid of playing any team, we go out and go for the win every single time and that will be the same on Sunday.

“Catalans are a great team with plenty of big middles and plenty of strike around the edge as well.

“But it’s nothing we can’t handle; we’ll come out firing on Sunday and try to get another win.”

Jowitt, who only turned 19 earlier this month, has thrived since Chester took over from Brian Smith in March.

He was picked for the first time this season in Chester’s first game – the 22-4 defeat at Hull FC – and has played in seven of the next nine games, of which Trinity have lost just one.

The Wakefield-born player has made the full-back jersey his own despite the presence of some experienced rivals.

Jowitt said: “Chezzy believes in us (youngsters) and that’s all we need.

“We have to go out and show it on the field and be thankful of that chance.

“I’m still young and still learning, still trying to pick tips up from people like Craig Hall and Ben Jones-Bishop – people who have played my position and can still play there.

“I’m just trying to cement a place in the team and have plenty of learning to do. While I’m still young I’m going to make a few mistakes along the way but I’ll learn from them and hopefully develop my game.”

Jowitt, son of former Trinity centre Ian, should face Tony Gigot, the France full-back, when they take on star-studded Catalans.

But after that 36-28 win against Warrington, there will be no trepidation.

“We knew they’d be a tough challenge but we don’t like to get turned over on own ground,” recalled Jowitt.

“We prepared well and got a special win. The lads were confident all week.

“I think every person who played believed we could win and it showed on the field.”

On playing at St James’ Park, which holds 52,000, he added: “As soon as I turned up to look at it on Monday, you sense how big it is from the outside.

“But when you get in on pitch side it’s ridiculous how big some of these stands are. It blew me away a little to be honest.

“As soon as we get some fans in here it will be bouncing.

“As a young lad I always followed Wakefield.

“I came to a few of the Magic Weekend games in Manchester and to now play in one, if I do get chance, will be a magical moment too.”
