Wakefield Trinity: Caton-Brown head to Toronto as Finn decides to play on

The Canadian club completed the signing of the 25-year-old former London Broncos and Salford winger before last Friday’s transfer deadline and have now announced the deal.

The Enfield-born Caton-Brown, who has made just five appearances for Trinity this season, will help Toronto offset the loss of Adam Higson and Greg Worthington through injury.

Wolfpack coach Paul Rowley said: “We have been keen on Mason for long parts of the season and to be able to bring in someone of his experience is a fantastic coup in such a short space of time.

“We’ve reacted quickly but we’re delighted with the acquisition.”

Caton-Brown, who is out of contract with Wakefield, said: “I’m really looking forward to meeting all the players and staff and I can’t wait to get stuck in to training and playing at Lamport Stadium.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about the fans and the atmosphere over there.

“The 8s are going to be an awesome challenge. From the results the team

have achieved throughout this year there’ll be a lot of confidence going into these huge games and to be involved in gaining promotion would be a special achievement.”

Meanwhile, Wakefield scrum-half Liam Finn will join League 1 club Newcastle Thunder when his loan stint with Super League Widnes expires at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old Ireland international is returning to Wakefield in October to join their coaching staff but will continue his playing career in the north-east under coach Jason Payne.

“I’m not really ready to hang my boots up yet and Jason asked if I would be interested in coming to Newcastle and he sold the club to me,” Finn said.

“It’s not something that I’ve really done before, play outside the rugby league corridor, so I started to get really excited about it and it is a fantastic opportunity to help some lads from outside the rugby league heartlands to improve and to try and help the club to where it wants to be.”

Finn, who has played almost 400 games in a 16-year career and led Ireland in the 2017 World Cup, has signed a two-year contract with the Thunder.

Payne said. “I’m delighted we’ve been able to sign Liam for 2019, he is exactly what we have been after for a while.

“He is an experienced half who can get us around the field and control the game for us and there’s no better at that than Liam.

“I genuinely believe that in terms of controlling a game, composure and decision making, all the vital parts of the game, he is still one of the best in Super League, so we’re really lucky to have him and really excited for what he will bring.”
