Wakefield Trinity in talks with ex-Catalans Dragons star Tony Gigot, confirms head coach Chris Chester

The 29-year-old failed to come to terms on a new contract with Catalans Dragons last season, leaving him without a club for 2020.

Gigot, who was the first French player to win the Lance Todd Trophy when Catalans won the Challenge Cup at Wembley in 2018, joined Toronto on trial before being let go by the Canadian outfit, who this week shockingly withdrew from Super League.

Chester is unsure if Gigot will be able to join his squad for the remainder of this season, given the financial challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are in talks with Tony,” Chester confirmed to BBC Radio Leeds.

“We were made aware probably two to three months ago that he was available. Those talks are ongoing at the minute but we are hopeful.

“Whether we can get him in now, it is a different kettle of fish, especially with everything that is going on at the moment with everybody having to take some kind of pay cut.

"But we will see with that one.”

The Frenchman can be utilised at full-back, centre and half-back, which could provide Chester with some versatility if a deal was to be done, and he has also made close to 200 career appearances

Gigot started his career with Catalans in 2010 but left for Toulouse Olympique two years later. He also had spells with semi-professional SO Avignon and London Broncos.

He returned to the Dragons in 2015, scoring 48 tries in 117 games before being released at the end of last campaign.
