Wakefield Trinity seek recruits for new Wheelchair Rugby League team
Wakefield Trinity Community Foundation are on the lookout for both able and non-able-bodied players as they prepare to launch a Wheelchair rugby league side this year.
Using a grant acquired through CreatedBy RLWC2021 Capital Grants Programme at the back end of 2020, the Foundation are set to create a team ahead of this year’s Rugby League World Cup.
The open session is for people of all abilities and will be attended by international players Lenny Izzard, Wayne Boardman and Ewan Clibbans. The training is able to take place following the latest easing of lockdown restrictions in England.
A statement from the Community Foundation read: “We are inviting players of all abilities and backgrounds to join the side which launches at Woodkirk Academy on Wednesday, April 21 at 6pm.
“This unique training session offers new players the chance to take part in a fast-moving associate of standard Rugby League and will be attended by current international players Lenny Izzard, Wayne Boardman and Ewan Clibbans.
“As a Foundation, we offer a wide range of opportunities within the disability game, with our PDRL side reaching the Grand Final at Old Trafford in 2019, while our all-new Wheelchair side is just another tow to our boat.”
Wheelchair Rugby League lead, Anthony Baker, believes there is no better time to get involved in Wheelchair Rugby League, with the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup set to take place alongside the men’s and women’s tournaments this year.
“I am excited to see the Wheelchair programme grow and give opportunities to men and women that haven’t had the chance to take part in a team sport before,” he explained.
“With the World Cup – held in England – just around the corner, there is no better time to get involved. We welcome individuals of any level to take part as this is an inclusive sport and is growing quickly and adds more positivity to the Wakefield Trinity brand.”
The training session will take place at Woolin Sports Hall, Woodkirk Academy, Tingley, Wakefield, WT3 1JQ.
