His fellow coaches voted for him in a campaign that has already yielded Leeds the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield and could end with Grand Final success at Old Trafford on Saturday night.

McDermott, who took charge at Headingley at the end of 2010, said: “I am very proud.

“It’s a huge achievement. I’ll probably toe the party line here but it is true and I mean it; this represents everyone behind me - the staff and players who have been brilliant, a great group.

“They are a fantastic bunch and it is easy to coach when you have such great talents.

“But the club is known for being a good environment, too, and a good place to work and it allows us all to be the best we can be.

“Hopefully we can go on and win on Saturday to do the treble but we know we have a very tough, determined Wigan side in our way.”
