Leeds Rhinos have unveiled a new look limited edition shirt that will commemorate those players who served and died during the First World War, marking 100 years since the Battle of the Somme and also helping raise funds for The Royal British Legion.

On July 1, 1916, the Battle of the Somme began with the Leeds Pals, the 15th (Service) Battalion (1st Leeds) The Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), heavily involved. This group of friends and colleagues left their home city for the front line to do their service for King and Country but were devastated on the opening day of the battle. The first day’s slaughter claimed around 20,000 English and French lives, this included Leeds Rugby League player Sergeant David Harkness Blakey.

The Leeds Rhinos Foundation Heritage Committee have researched and collated a full list of Leeds players, both first team and second team, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War as part of the project. All the names are included on the inside of the shirt on the neckline.

On Friday, July 15, Leeds Rhinos will play Wigan Warriors at Headingley Carnegie Stadium with Leeds set to wear the specially produced heritage shirt. For each limited edition replica shirt sold, The Royal British Legion will receive a donation.

The replica shirt is on sale in the Leeds Rhinos club shop and online at Adult shirts are available in sizes XS to 6XL for £47, the same price for ladies replica shirts in sizes 8 to 18. Junior shirts are £36.50 in ages 6 to 16 whilst toddler shirts in ages 0-4 are £30 each.

The design of the shirt also incorporates the club’s traditional city crest logo for the first time since 1996. There is also an image of the Thiepval Memorial - a war memorial to over 70,000 missing British and South African servicemen, who died in the Battles of the Somme, with no known grave.
